Week 3 Film Room Short - Texans LG Kenyon Green
Spotlighting a stellar performance in a promising start to a career for Texans rookie LG Kenyon Green
The Texans haven’t been anything to write home about so far this season from a team or even offensive perspective, but the left side of their offensive line with Laremy Tunsil and Kenyon Green has been arguably the best in the NFL over the first three games of the year.
A big part of what I do is shine a light not just on the offensive line in general but also on stellar performances from players on struggling teams. There have been countless examples over the years of guys performing at extremely high levels but being completely overlooked and forgotten about. Seeing offensive linemen who already receive hardly any recognition for what they do on the field perform at a high-level when everything around them isn’t going well has always been an admirable quality that I make a point to acknowledge as much as I can. That is what Green is doing now for this Texans team that ranks 30th in yards per play and 29th in EPA per play.
Another reason why it is important to spotlight Green is how he is winning. At 6’4”, 325 pounds with 34 1/8” arms, Green has elite size for the position. It’s not just the physical dimensions on paper that stand out, it’s his wide-bodied, thick build that is in the mold of a Rodger Saffold-Richie Incognito-Quenton Nelson-Trey Smith archetype from a purely physical perspective that is so special.
Green has the play strength and power that typically comes with that frame and build as well, which have been absolute weapons in the run game through the first three games of the regular season and going back to the preseason.
I have highlighted Green on prior film rooms this season for many of the same qualities and dove deeper into what makes him such a standout player in this one including more nuanced skills that he is starting to display regarding mental processing and hand placement as a run and pass-blocker.
Below I break all of that down and more in a condensed, bite-size film room that illustrates an outstanding start for the rookie first-round pick and the traits that make him special.
