Film Room Short - 49ers All-Pro LT Trent Williams vs. the Cowboys: 4 Pass Pro Reps
49ers LT Trent Williams was fresh off being selected first-team All-Pro for the first time in his career against the Cowboys in their Wildcard matchup and continued to dominate the competition. I posted several run-blocking highlights of his performance already on Twitter, but wanted to save these four reps in pass-protection for a film room format to give more detailed analysis.
The traits and skills needed to thrive on an island without help in the drop back passing game to include high-leverage situations against elite edge-rushers are immensely valuable when scouting the tackle position. When a player has those tools to succeed in these specific scenarios, they are worth their weight in gold. What makes Williams so special is that on top of being an all-time dominant run-blocker at the position, he can shut down premier rushers off the edge without help.
These four reps against Cowboys electric edge-rusher Randy Gregory demonstrate just how special of a player Williams really is. You will see elite level traits such as explosiveness, snap timing, foot quickness, weight distribution (balance), use of hands, range and more.
As we get further into the playoffs expect another film room or two, but to kick things off let’s go to where we started this season and geek out on the player that has given us an all-time great season at left tackle.
